Top tips for beginner runners

We’ve recently had a wellbeing week at my workplace where I spoke a little bit about how I got into running, my experience and shared my top tips if you’re a beginner to running.

  1. Follow a plan or app – the BBC Get Inspired Couch to 5k app is a great starting point.
  2. Don’t go it alone
Find a friend or family member to take along with you – it’s always easier when doing it together.
If you can’t meet face to face, go virtual – arrange a day and time when you’re going to run – message or call each other when you’re home to see how you’ve both done.
Running club usually start guided Couch to 5K sessions from January. Run Together has information on local running clubs to you.
  3. Don’t worry about how long it takes or how out of breath you are – it will get easier with each run.
  4. Make sure your trainers fit – if you’re enjoying it and think you will continue (as it can be pricey) you can visit a running shop to get your GAIT analysed. My favourite locally is Leicester Running Shop but Runners Need also do this nationwide. All it involves is running for a few minutes on a treadmill.
  5. Warm up and cool down to avoid injury. This video by The Running Channel has some great tips for a warm up and cool down.
  6. Focus on how far you’ve come rather than how long you have left. This is the best piece of advise I’ve been given – focus on the positive.
  7. Treat yourself – it might be a soak in the bath or a glass of wine but give yourself something to look forward to once you’re done.
  8. Set yourself a goal – whether it’s a parkrun or an official 5k event having something to work towards will motivate you. Click here to read how parkrun has become such a big part of my life.
  9. Listen to your favourite music and the time will fly by.
  10. Rest is just as important as running so make sure you take days off in between.

I’ll share more of Q&A session over the next few weeks but for now I hope these help if you’re planning to start running.
