Run Report: Hackney Marshes parkrun

A few weeks ago on a trip to London, I dropped by at Hackney Marshes parkrun. After reading the course description I was quite looking forward to an out-and-back route – a little different to my three-lap route at Market Harborough.

I took the 1.5 mile journey to the parkrun from where I was staying and arrived at around 8.40 in time to find my bearings. With music going on in the park I wondered if this was normal for Hackney Marshes parkrun?!

The first timers briefing took place at around 8.50 and there were plenty of tourists taking part in the course for the first time. We found out here that the course was different to the one on the website due to building works taking place in the part. Instead, we would be going out and back then going across a bridge for another out and back. I’m glad I was there for the briefing otherwise I would have been very confused!

We lined up pretty soon after this which is where we found out that the music I’d heard was actually a rave still going on from the night before (!) and that there were a few people we should probably watch out for on the path.

The course was all lined with a concrete path which I liked – I’m not to keen on uneven ground and I was feeling good. The turnaround point took absolutely forever (in my mind anyway) to appear but I was soon there and heading .. sort of .. for the home stretch. I especially knew this when I could hear the music again.

Heading back towards the start we turned off again for another out and back. I found this part quite difficult knowing I was so close to the finish but still had half a mile or so left. Trying to catch up with the person in front of me I just couldn’t pick up the pace and just carried on plodding.

Coming back off the bridge I have 0.2 of a mile to go – it was so warm I was quite happy to be stopping. The start line was in sight not long to go and I crossed!

Time – 29.07.

I clapped a few others in and then got on my way for another 1.5 mile plod back to where I’m staying, stopping for a croissant on the way. I enjoyed Hackney Marshes due to its out and back and the route was mostly under trees which in the warm weather was very much appreciated!
